In positive psychology, a flow state, also known as being in the zone, is the mental state in which a person performing some activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process.

According to Csikszentmihalyi, flow is completely focused motivation, a single-minded immersion representing the ultimate experience in harnessing the emotions in service of performance and learning.

Characteristics

The flow state shares many characteristics with hyperfocus. Flow is marked by effortless execution and a distorted sense of time, hours can pass in what feels like minutes.
